BEST OF SACRAMENTO 2007! October 25, 2007 - "EDITORS' PICK
Motoshi Kosako: Best Jazz Hound in Tie and Tails October 22, 2007 - Motoshi has begun working with his Jazz Trio, and they are looking to play Jazz in Sacramento and the surrounding areas. -So, any places you would like to see him, tell them! It is always a challenge to work into new venues no matter how good you are. - He is also playing with Doug Pauly, a jazz guitarist playing regularly in Sacramento (he is on our link page). This has been real fun for Motoshi as he used to be a jazz guitarist. Motoshi has said that the sound of the jazz guitar with a jazz harp is much richer than he had expected. He has been writing the jazz music for his band. We are hoping to record in February/March. It is sounding incredible. I am just amazed. Not only am I amazed (I don't know allot about Jazz ... I like some and don't like some) but it is really fun to watch other jazz musicians that are listening to it. The pleasure they show is its own indicator. -Terra
2nd Place in the International Jazz Harp Competition held August 3, 2007!
August 10, 2007 - Motoshi came in a close 2nd in the only International Jazz Harp competition held, in the world. The competitors came from all over, and he said, "They were good!" Motoshi style was likened to that of Kieth Jarrett, which was a great honor for him. Which is very different from the other harpist there. But then we have to remember that Motoshi was a professional jazz musician long before he ever laid his hands on the harp. Where as, most other harpists, are harpist that decide they would like to break lose, and play! This difference, though it may seem minor, has, I believe, set Motoshi jazz apart. He is in truth, a Jazz Musician that plays the harp, and not a harpist that plays jazz. Another factor, that was shocking for the other harpist, players and judges alike, is that Motoshi is primarily self taught, which has its advantages with a few disadvantages.

Jazz MusicianMotoshi will be live on KXJZ the Sacramento Jazz station on the Insight program, July 26. He will then be leaving for Salt Lake City to compete in the Lyon & Healy International Jazz and Pop Harpfest 2007 . Motoshi has just recorded his first Jazz Harp CD for demo purposes. He plays standards and cool jazz (modal jazz). If you are interested contact him.
As an instrument, the harp has not been developed to its full potential in jazz. Learning how the harp can be played to meet the highest strictest standards of jazz is one of Motoshi's driving inspirations. He spends many hours practicing, listening, and practicing more. He has paired up with singers, bassists, drummers and some EMC recording artists in his exploration of jazz music performed on a harp. The harp is an unique instrument with certain limitations which ultimately means a harpist cannot imitate a guitarist, pianist or any other jazz musician. Constantly pushing the envelop he has taken his training as a rock guitarist, professional jazz guitarist and classical harpist mixed them all up, bringing forth something new, a process well known to great to jazz musicians.
